Research: Modeling of acid mediated cancer migration

    Cancer is a disease that disrupts the tissue homeostasis and architecture in one or more regions of the body. The onset of such an event can either be due to purely genetic (heredity) factors or epigenetic factors or a combination of both. Though cancer is difficult to be defined, it can be characterized by common features like uncontrolled growth, tendency to spread to other parts of the body (metastasis), etc. One other strange feature of cancer is the reversal of cross membrane pH-gradient which creates a (relatively) acidic extracellular region and a (relatively) alkaline intracellular region.
    My research focuses on modeling this feature phenomenologically via PDEs', SDEs', RODEs' and SPDEs' and finally to make predictions about the local invasiveness of the cancer.
    Such predictions can be insightful for the doctors, since a growing philosophy in cancer treatment being: controlling the cancer indirectly by controlling its local environment.
