Modelling and simulation of flows on networks, like traffic fow on highways, supply chain models or gas flow in pipeline systems are investigated. On the one hand detailed models based on partial differential equations describing the dynamics on single arcs of the network (roads, pipelines, etc.) have been constantly developed and improved. On the other hand large scale networks with strongly simplified dynamics or even static description of the flow have been investigated for traffic flow or supply chain management. In particular, optimal control problems for traffic flow on networks arising from traffic/supply chain management are a major focus of research in this field.
