Mathematics in Industry and Commerce (MIC)

PhD degrees at the University of Kaiserslautern are research based. Therefore, students should have a very clear idea of their possible research interest and the ability to work independently. They should already have experience in the field of research in Mathematics.

Possible research areas are:

  • Applied Mathematical Statistics
  • Computer Algebra and Singularity Theory
  • Differential Equations: Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computing
  • Geomathematics
  • Mathematical Control Theory
  • Optimization
  • Stochastic Control and Financial Mathematics

The PHD programme "Mathematics in Industry and Commerce" has been initiated in a co-operation of the DAAD with the Department of Mathematics and provides a unique chance for students from Developing Countries to profit from the academic and research resources at the University of Kaiserslautern. Annually, the DAAD sponsors the programme with 5 scholarships. Students accepted to the programme are automatically granted a scholarship, a separate application with the DAAD is not necessary. Students apply modern mathematical theories (partial differential equations, stochastics, etc.) to model technological, economic and ecological problems. Computer-oriented numerical methods (FEM, optimization, statistics, computer algebra, etc.) are used to evaluate the models.

Programme Duration

The PhD programme takes 3 years to complete. There is no fixed starting date. However, it is recommended to start in August with the participation in the Integration and Language Course.

Admission Requirements

German Language Knowlegde

Knowledge of the German language is not necessary but will be an advantage. Foreign students have to pass a German language test after one year to be eligible to continue their enrollment. German language courses are offered in the Integration course and continue during the semester.

Application Deadline

Applications for the DAAD programme "Mathematics in Industry and Commerce" have to be with us by January 15 since we jointly take a decision with the DAAD.
