PhD Programme

In general, a Masters or Diplom degree is the pre-requisite to enter the PhD Programme. Admission for the PhD Programme is only possible if one of the professors in the Department of Mathematics is willing to supervise the PhD student. Due to the limited number of students who can be supervised by each professor, the admissions for the PhD Programme are restricted. Possible research areas are:


In most of the research areas for PhD, candidates will work in their PhD thesis on projects which are related to real-world problems. To work on these projects, the candidates will have co-supervisors from the industry or the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM).

Besides the possibility to do PhD in the position of staff member in the Department of Mathematics, candidates can also become PhD students of the:


The Graduate Research Training Programme (Graduiertenkolleg) provides altogether 15 scholarships of a maximal duration of 3 years. In the Fraunhofer College Programme, candidates can do their PhD research in the scope of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Mathematics.

For students coming from developing countries, it is possible to participate in the PhD Programme: Mathematics in Industry and Commerce. Annually, the DAAD provides about 5 scholarships for the programme.
