Mathematics International is a new study programme which combines a well-founded study of mathematics with the requirements of an internationally oriented education. Mathematics International is based on an initiative of the German Government and the DAAD (German Academic Foreign Service). The programme addresses both German and foreign students.
The students choose from five specialized fields of Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics or Management Mathematics, in which they wish to specialize. These fields are:
The aim of this new curriculum is a vocationally qualifying degree in Mathematics, Industrial- or Management Mathematics. In addition to the promotion of the cultural exchange, the international focus of the programme Mathematics International will ensure the students' ability to meet competition on a global work market.
In order to achieve this aim, the programme Mathematics International will be set up in such a manner that a successful completion within the normal study period is possible and yet a high standard of education is guaranteed.
During the course of each term, English speaking guest lecturers will take over part of the tutoring, whereas short-term lecturers will be won. The department intends to take this opportunity to invite noted scientists who are able to substantially enrich the quality and variety of teaching and research.
In addition to the width and depth of the mathematical education, a further aim is learning to work with computers, and the development of software as an aid to solving mathematical problems. Further, in particular the three specialized fields of Financial Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics, and Optimization and Statistics contain a strong interdisciplinary as well as practical component, which is not only expressed through the selection of the subsidiary subject, but also through the mandatory and recommended lectures within the range of the mathematical section. In addition, because of the mandatory time abroad for the German students and the lectures offered in English, the students accumulate key qualifications in view of the future start of their career.
To enable a career start on the German as well as on the international work market, after the successful completion of the course, a Diplom or a Master's grade and possibly a double degree at the University of Kaiserslautern and a foreign partner university can be gained.
In all specialization subjects, the determined duration of studies in the Master's/Diploma Programme amounts to four/five semesters, respectively, whereby the fourth/fifth term of Mathematics International is reserved for the preparation of the thesis. In the event that relative prerequisites are proven, it is possible to be classified into to a higher programme semester.
The academic year at the University of Kaiserslautern is divided into two semesters, one winter semester (1st October until 31st March) and one summer semester (1st April until 30th September). During the winter semester, most of the lectures are held from mid October until mid February and during the summer semester from mid April until mid July. The programme normally commences at the beginning of the winter semester.
Beside the possibility to participate the full duration, for the foreign students, the possibility exists for a "Kontaktstudium" (contact studies), i.e., students study for one or two terms in Kaiserslautern and complete their studies at their home university. Possibly a double degree at the University of Kaiserslautern and the home university can be gained.
